The 2017 edition of SSIMA – Imaging for Medical Applications took place from July 17 to 21 in Brașov, Transylvania, Romania. Organized by the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology, and Eindhoven University of Technology, in partnership with Philips South-East Europe, the event focused on “Imaging in Cardiology” and provided participants with in-depth tutorials on various subfields of computational medical imaging, ranging from medical image acquisition to visualization and machine learning.
The event featured prominent keynote speakers such as Prof. Natalia Trayanova from Johns Hopkins University, who discussed image-based computational cardiology, and Prof. Ovidiu Andronesi from Harvard Medical School, who presented advanced MR imaging and spectroscopy methods for brain studies in neurological diseases. Other notable speakers included Prof. Bart ter Haar Romeny from Eindhoven University of Technology, Prof. Laurent Cohen from Université Paris-Dauphine, and Prof. Alain Trouvé from École Normale Supérieure.
SSIMA 2017 attracted 70 participants, including students, young researchers, and professionals from academia and industry. The program included practical application sessions in the afternoons, allowing participants to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from the morning tutorials. Highlights of the event included a dedicated workshop day sponsored by Philips, which focused on medical innovations in CT scanning, ultrasound image quantification, and advanced visualization techniques.
The event also included a trip to Dracula’s Castle, offering attendees a cultural experience. SSIMA 2017 successfully combined high-quality academic content with practical applications, fostering a collaborative environment for advancing medical imaging technologies.
