DATE & TIME:
July 2, 2018 – July 6, 2018 All Day
Edition Summary
Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania
Topic: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
The fourth edition of the International School of Medical Imaging (SSIMA) took place from July 2 to 6, 2018, in Sibiu, Romania. This year, SSIMA welcomed 15 distinguished professors from prestigious universities and representatives from the medical equipment industry and the business community, who delivered lectures and workshops to the 70 participants from over 10 countries, including Canada, the United States, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Finland, and Switzerland.
In a significant milestone, SSIMA 2018 became the first and only event in Central and Southeastern Europe to be endorsed by the prestigious MICCAI Society, the leading international society in medical imaging and computer-assisted surgery with over 100,000 members worldwide. This endorsement highlights the event’s quality and international recognition.
Notable speakers at this year’s event included Michael Lustig from the University of California, Berkeley, renowned for his work in nuclear magnetic resonance technologies; Bart ter Haar Romeny from Eindhoven University of Technology, known for his AI software designed to prevent diabetes; and George Haber, a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur known as the “father of the DVD.”
For the first time, SSIMA introduced two satellite events: one dedicated to medical professionals and students, and the other focused on medical startups and initiatives in the field. The event brought together technology enthusiasts and doctors to discuss one of the most hotly debated topics—the use of artificial intelligence for medical purposes. The effects and benefits, the controlled use, and the limitations of AI in medicine were just a few of the topics that SSIMA 2018 brought to the stage.
